I have finally completed my Reconsidering Vietnam assignment…
In this project I have looked at the representation of the Vietnam conflict in modern popular TV animation.
I have concentrated on some of the most well-known series (namely, The Simpsons and Futurama, created by Matt Groening; American Dad and Family Guy, created by Seth MacFarlane; and South Park, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone) and I have created a short video collage using the episodes that represent the Vietnam conflict or deal with issues connected with its representation in the media and popular culture.
This research has been submitted for assessment for Unit 2.2 Critical Perspectives – MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography, as part of the Reconsidering Vietnam Project run by the London College of Communication in association with the University of the Arts Photography and Archive Research Centre (PARC).
I’ve decided to present my Vietnam project in the form of simple website; even though the project itself consists of a simple video I wanted to add a suitable ‘frame’ in which this could be presented. I have included as separate sections, a brief introduction to what I have done and an informal “Q&A” section in which I have explained more in details the reasons why I have decided to carry the project in this form. I didn’t feel that an academic essay would be ‘consistent’ with my project which, even though serious, is entertaining by its very nature; I have opted for something slightly more direct and interactive.
